The Rotary Club of Edina will welcome James Eli Shiffer as program speaker at the Thursday, Feb. 4, meeting. Shiffer has worked at the Star Tribune since 2005, both as an editor and reporter. He will speak about "Journey to the Dark Web: Free Speech Zone or Criminal Hideout?"
 
New member Stan Brown will be officially inducted into the club at the meeting.
 
The Rotary Club of Edina will welcome James Shiffer as program speaker at the Thursday, Feb. 4, meeting. Shiffer has worked at the Star Tribune since 2005, both as an editor and reporter. He will speak about "Journey to the Dark Web: Free Speech Zone or Criminal Hideout?"
 
A journalist for more than 25 years, Shiffer is currently the watchdog and data editor at the Star Tribune, overseeing a team of investigative reporters, and he writes a weekly column called Full Disclosure. In 2015, he received the Peter Popovich First Amendment Award from the Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists, recognizing his effort to promote press freedom and government transparency through his columns. He also writes about local history, and is a board member of the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information. Before coming to Minnesota, he spent 12 years as a reporter and editor at The News & Observer in North Carolina. 
 
He grew up in a suburb of New York City, but he’s an honorary Minnesotan for having married a Minneapolis native.

The Rotary Club of Edina meets Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. at the Edina Country Club. All are welcome. Cost for lunch and the program is $19 for adults, $12 for children.
