Rotary Club of Edina past president Tim Murphy was installed as the 2015–2016 Rotary District 5950 Governor at a celebration dinner Thursday, June 18. Many members of the Rotary Club of Edina gathered along with members of many other Rotary clubs in the District, District Leadership, and special guests, to honor outgoing District Governor Jim Nelson, and welcome new District Governor Murphy.

On the evening of June 18, 2015, the Rotary Club of Edina met to honor one of our own. Tim Murphy was installed as the incoming Rotary District 5950 Governor for 2015–2016. In addition, outgoing District Governor Jim Nelson was recognized for his successful year leading the District.

Outgoing District Governor Jim "Teddy Bear" Nelson with his wife, Ellen Nelson, poses next to the District 5950 Governor banner at the event. Jim is a member of the Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club.

Tim is a long time member of our Club and a past president, and as the event's Master of Ceremonies Bob Solheim noted, "He's the guy we want to be when we grow up!"

Indeed Tim is a legend in his own time. In an emotional speech to the 200+ plus Rotarians from clubs around the District and state and special guests in attendance, Tim shared about family, faith, friends, supporters, fellow Rotarians like Dick Teegen and Mike Norman, who have and continue to have an impact on his journey.

Tim's family was on hand to help him celebrate his leadership role in the District for 2015–2016. Attending were his sons Rick and Ryan Murphy, and his wife of 37 years, Cindy Murphy.

Tim shared many wonderful thoughts including:

"We are what we seek. What are you seeking?

"My Rotary experience has been life changing."

"Don't smother talented people. Let go and empower people to use their talents. Surround yourself with good people and they can do great things without your micro-management wisdom."

He ended with this upcoming year's Rotary International theme: "Our time has come and will never come again. Be a Gift to the World."

Check out this short video containing just some of Tim's story, filmed as part of the "My Rotary Story" video series. The series of Rotary Club of Edina members talking with Bob Solheim about their Rotary journey aired periodically at meetings through the 2014–2015 Rotary year. Such a short video can't list the many, many ways Tim has been involved in his community, professional associations, church groups, and outreach for Rotary around the world, but it gives a quick snapshot of Tim's passion and energy for Rotary.

Kudos to you Tim Murphy! We thank you for being a gift to us and to many more beyond our Rotary circle. And, we thank you for the great things that lie ahead. We know you will continue to be a gift.
