STRIVE = Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education.  Our newest initiative, in collaboration with the Edina Morningside
Rotary Club, is a program called STRIVE. Our two Rotary clubs are working with Edina High School to mentor and encourage students
who are in the lower third of their class. These students are as gifted and talented as students at the top but, for family or personal
reasons, need other resources to help them succeed.  More information at their website,

Camp Enterprise, November 5, 2009  This year’s Camp E was held Thursday, Nov. 5 through Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. At Camp Enterprise, students develop teamwork through an Outward Bound experience at the beginning of camp. They learn about business skills (marketing, finance, management – skills needed in every organization, including government and nonprofits) by working on case studies. They compete for “best” solutions to the case study challenges. They write essays about their experience to win scholarship prizes. They hear from speakers ranging from the motivational to finance experts. And they have fun.  Go to http://www.campenterprise.org for more information.

Tim Murphy, past president of our club and District 5950 director for international service, was chosen to lead the District Group Study Exchange (GSE) team to Ethiopia and Kenya in spring 2010.

Tim will head the team of four non-Rotarians for a month of cultural and vocational visits in Rotary District 9200, East Africa.  A GSE team from Ethiopia and Kenya will come to our district from May 2-May 30, 2010.  San Asato, Director of International Service, will coordinate our club's participation in hosting the visit. Please contact San at sasato@comcast.net to be on the planning committee for this visit.

Congratulate Tim when you see him or contact him at tim.murphy@murphyauto.netTim has a 14-year history of dedication and commitment to Rotary, including leadership of many service trips to South America and Africa. He will be an outstanding team leader.

Jean Morrison was interviewed on Sunday, July 26, 2009, on radio KFAI  90.3 FM  106.7 AM to share her story about the Edina Rotary Mentor Program at PWCC/Bethune and the role of a mentor.

From Tim Murphy, Rotary District 5950 International Project Chair - Rotary Exchange Visit from Kenya

Edina Noon Rotary and District 5950 have a significant Rotary project underway in the Mathare Valley, one of Kenya's largest slums just outside Nairobi. We are building five ablution blocks which are elaborate restrooms or 'sanitation blocks' that will each serve thousands of the residents that reside there.

Last year when our Rotary District visited Kenya, we were hosted on an extensive tour of the Nairobi area, Nairobi city hall, and the two largest slums by Jackson Swadi, the City Council Member of the Mathare Ward 'Mabatini' where our project is, and Geophrey Majiwa, the Mayor of Nairobi.

Councilor Jackson and Mayor Majiwa visited us to thank Rotary, to see the Twin Cities and to learn more of our government.

Fireside Chats

The Fireside Chats are a great way for newer members to learn more about Rotary in a smaller, informal setting. Fireside Chats are held at the
Homes of Rotarians.  A typical Fireside Chat will have 8 to 12 members with the host leading an informal discussion about Rotary in general and the many activities the Edina Rotary Club takes part. It is a great opportunity for newer members to get to know other members and to ask questions about Rotary.  Our most recent Fireside Chats were held through April 30, 2009.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards ("RYLA")

Our club sponsored 2 wonderful Edina High School students to attend Camp RYLA (which stands for "Rotary Youth Leadership Awards") which was held 4/24/09 through 4/28/09 at Camp St. Croix near Hudson, WI.  RYLA Camps are operated by local Rotary Clubs in various locations around the U.S. This one is run by the St. Paul Rotary Club.

Edina Bike Parade, Sunday, May 17

Award of Excellence for Service Projects - International
Award of Excellence for The Rotary Foundation
Award of Excellence for Public Relations - Newsletter and Web Sites
Award of Excellence for Public Relations - Marketing, Advertising and Promotion

In addition to the Club awards, 19 members of our Club were given Service Above Self Awards. On top of all of this our Club received the Presidential Citation from RI.  We received a tremendous amount of recognition at the District Conference and while we do not do all we do for recognition, it was very nice to receive the recognition.

Recent Gifts The club has recently granted financial help to the Sojourner Project, Inc. and to Free Arts Minnesota.  Sojourner provides safe shelter for women and children, advocacy and education for individuals and communities victimized by domestic violence.  The club's grant was $2,680.00.  Free Arts brings the healing powers of artistic expression and mentorship into the lives of abused, neglected, and at-risk children and their families.  The club's grant was for $1,500 for a PC/workstation.  See more information about the charitable work of the club on the Community Service page.

Plea from VEAP

Your help is needed!  VEAP was caught off guard with an unprecedented increase in the number of people requesting help (almost 5,000 people last month alone – a 25 percent increase from last year), and an alarming lack of donations, down from last year by more than 20 percent. Everyone has been affected by the economy. VEAP is organizing an additional food drive right now, collecting the following items that will make a vital impact on those served.

  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Boxed Dinners [Hamburger Helper]
  • Tuna
  • Baking items (Biscuit/Pancake Mix]

Food can be delivered to VEAP, 9731 James Ave. S., Bloomington, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Thursdays, VEAP is open until 7 p.m. Collection sites are also located in Edina, including one at City Hall. During October, if you donate five or more non-perishable items at Edina Liquor,  you will receive 10 percent off your total purchase. For more information, call 952-888-9616.

We are on TV and on the Internet!
The program portion of the Rotary Club of Edina’s weekly meetings are being televised and air on Edina Community Channel 16 (EDINA 16)
noon Mondays, 7 p.m. Tuesday and 5 p.m. Saturdays. It is also available on the Internet at: http://www.ci.edina.mn.us/departments/WatchaMeeting.htm
Rotaract
Rotaract is a great way to get potential Rotarians (age 18-30) involved with Rotary early in their careers and is a great way
to grow the Rotary family. If you or your members have friends, coworkers or relatives that you think would be good candidates
for Rotaract based on the description of our club below, please extend our invitation to them to join us for this happy hour.
If you're interested in learning more about the club yourself, we welcome you to attend a meeting or to contact me -
Brian Edquist, President, Minneapolis Rotaract Club (bedquist@sjm.com or 651-491-7138. Thanks for your support!

Look for us in the Choir Loft!

The Minneapolis Rotaract Club is for young professionals aged 18 to 30. Our club focuses on international and community
service projects, professional and leadership development, and fellowship through social events and volunteer projects
that build friendships that last. In the last year our club has raked leaves for the elderly, remodeled a Teen Room at
the Brian Coyle Center, cooked breakfast for young single mothers and their children at the Jeremiah Program, and
volunteered at the Winter Carnival. Whether it is through our international or local service projects which connect
us with Rotaractors and Rotarians from around the world or an opportunity to study abroad through a Rotary Foundation
scholarship, you will be sure to find something that is suited to you.

Instructions for Writing Checks

This has been an ongoing problem as to whom our checks are written. Please all be aware that we have three organizations that we should be writing our checks to:

Rotary Club of Edina: All quarterly statements to include our monthly dues and meal costs.

Edina Rotary Foundation: All tax-deductible contributions to our own Club’s foundation. This is primarily during and for our annual fundraiser.

Rotary International Foundation: All Paul Harris contributions or tax-deductible contributions made throughout the year to RI. These are not deposited into the Edina Rotary Foundation but go directly to RI and are credited to each of our respective Paul Harris accounts.

Meeting Make-Ups

Be sure to report your make-ups as soon as possible after attending another meeting and no later than the 5th of the following month. Make-ups for each month are reported to our District and RI following the 5th. If your make-ups come in later than the 5th, they will be credited to the month in which they are received. In addition, members are given credit on their invoice for any make-ups. Therefore, timely reporting allows the Club Administrator to include these make-ups on the next invoice. Make-ups can be mailed to Rotary Club of Edina, 4801 W. 50th St., Edina, MN  55424 or e-mailed to Club Administrator Annie Kennedy at clubadmin@edinarotary.org.

Also, every make-up must include the following four items:
(1) Member's name
(2) locations of make-up
(many clubs do not have this printed on their make-up cards),
(3) date of make-up

(4) date of missed meeting to apply make-up.
