The two Rotary clubs in Edina will gather for their annual fall joint meeting this Thursday, Oct. 13. The Rotary Club of Edina will host members of the Edina Morningside Rotary Club at 12:15 p.m. at the Edina Country Club. The program speaker will be Apogee Enterprises, Inc. CEO Joe Puishys.
Puishys was named Apogee Enterprises, Inc. chief executive officer, president and a member of the board of directors in August 2011. With more than 30 years experience in manufacturing businesses, direct industry experience and a proven track record of success in leadership positions, he has developed strategies to grow Apogee to $1 billion in sales. Before joining Apogee, Puishys served for three years as president of Honeywell's Environmental and Combustion Controls division.
Fall is a busy time for the Rotary Club of Edina! We have already enjoyed our biggest event of the year—the successful Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala Oct. 1. The members of the Rotary Class of 2015–2016 organized a volunteer activity with Special Olympics of Minnesota and invited others to join in Oct. 8. We continue the busy month this week as Joe Hayes and his team of volunteers host Edina High School students at St. Patrick's Church in Edina today, Oct. 12, for the annual Leadership Ethics Seminar "Do the Right Thing." Rotarians and other volunteers will spend the day guiding students in small-group discussions about ethical decisions, and students will hear from a speaker and take part in a case study discussion with the entire group. Our club's participation in the VEAP food backpack program is ongoing during the school year, along with other Rotary clubs. Contact Kenny Smith for more information.
Below is a listing of other upcoming service projects, social events and special meetings this fall that Rotarians are encouraged to take part in. If registration is required, the link is included below. You can also click on the event in the calendar listing to the right and get to the registration page. Don't let autumn pass you by without spending some time giving back to the community and getting to know your fellow Rotarians!

President Ann Platt opened the meeting with a recap of the Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala held Oct. 1 including a wonderful video clip showing several members doing their best to impersonate the Village People dancing to their song Y.M.C.A.. The video is a clear demonstration that these Rotarians should abandon any thought of a possible dance career and stick to their day jobs.
Matt Boockmeier provided a warm invocation and lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Four-Way Test.
Ken Andersen introduced our guests and their hosts, including:
Hunter Pribyl-Huguelet, son and guest of Marie Pribyl
Lisa Wiens Heinsohn, guest of Tom Cook
Mark Stageberg, guest of Keith Benson
Paul Notermann, guest of Andrea Thompson Miller
Rosella DePetro, guest of Deirdre Kvale
Barb Huibregtse, guest of John Mazzara
Mike Fischer, guest of Doug Johnson
Toni Gerard gave her classification talk. Her primary reason for joining Rotary was she enjoyed how much fun our club has. She was born in Tokyo while her father served our country in the U.S. Air Force. She attended the University of Minnesota and St. Thomas. She works for RBCU, which has three locations with assets of $270 million. Toni lives in the Linden Hills area of Minneapolis with her husband and son. Toni shared that she was turning in her donation to The Rotary Foundation today, making her a Paul Harris Fellow.
Past President Jennifer Bennerotte asked membership to vote on a change to our club's bi-laws regarding past-due accounts. The change was unanimously approved, and Treasurer John Flynn will provide enforcement.
Ann Platt informed us of the many volunteer opportunities that are available to us. See this week's round-up of projects and events in The Barker, as well as the club's website, www.EdinaRotary.org, for more information.
Leann Stessman introduced our speaker, Caryn Sullivan. Caryn is an award-winning author, columnist and inspirational speaker. Her presentation was titled “Living in the Moment, Preparing for the Inevitable.” She provided encouragement in preparing our families that outlive us by discussing and organizing the many unfinished items that we will leave behind. She recommends creating a “Box of Love” that will provide details about our wishes regarding these items. Some of the items she discussed were cremation vs. burial, how our monies will be divided up amongst our children, small business succession, and creating a password file for our family and executors.
