Deb Anderson to speak at Feb. 2 meeting

The Rotary Club of Edina will welcome Deb Anderson as the program speaker at the Thursday, Feb. 2, meeting. Anderson is founder and owner of By the Yard, an outdoor furniture company located in Jordan, Minnesota.

Anderson started By the Yard in 1995. Anderson will share the highs and lows of growing the business, as well as transitioning into retirement. Anderson is the sister of Edina Rotarian Mike Kallas.

Renee Harberts will give her classification talk at the meeting.

They had a ball! Bowling Night a success!

The annual Edina Rotary Bowling Event was Jan. 28. More than 40 Rotarians and guests (including Youth Exchange student Justine Onama) gathered at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park to dine, compare custom bowling shirts and be divided up into teams for the cutthroat competition. Door prizes were given out (many great door prizes!) and gutter balls and strikes were thrown. After the pins had settled, the winners and losers were awarded their trophies.

Sonja Tengdin was awarded the "Best Bowler" trophy for achieving the highest individual score of the night. Jim Platt cheerfully accepted the award for the lowest individual score of the evening.

The team with the lowest scores of the night, or the "Biggest Losers," were Arlene Chung (who accompanied Rotarian Jack Atnip to the event), Club Administrator Jennifer Garske and Dave Tengdin.

The team with the second highest scores of the night were David Aase, Kelly Sprague, Michael Stanzak and Sonja Tengdin.

And the winning team of the night, with the highest scores, were John Flynn, Paul Mooty, Jeff Ohe and Nancy Slyce. Congratulations to all the winners!

Event chair Mark Jessen received a round of applause for the successful event, as well as his co-chairs, John Buttolph and Sutton McGraw. Thanks for all your hard work!

Rotary Happy Hour/VDG is tonight, Feb. 1

The next Rotary Vocational Development Group will be tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 1. The speaker at the meeting will be Sutton McGraw.

Once a month, Edina Rotarians have a chance to connect with other club members, and any guests, at the happy hour. This Rotary event is held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Mezz at the Lunds & Byerly's, 7171 France Ave. S., Edina. The meeting will feature a brief presentation from a featured Rotarian, plus time for introductions, networking and questions. The Rotary Club of Edina and EMRC collaborate on this event.

Interact's Skate to End Polio is Feb. 10

The Edina High School Interact Club is planning a "Skate to End Polio" from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at Braemar Arena's Backyard Rink. Enjoy open skating with friends and family! All ages are welcome! Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids, and can be bought at upcoming Rotary meetings, the day of the event, or by contacting Josh Sprague.

All proceeds go towards Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign, which began in 1985 and has raised more than $1.3 billion towards the elimination of polio around the world.

The skate-a-thon is sponsored by the Interact Club of Edina High School, Rotary Club of Edina, Edina Morningside Rotary Club and Braemar Arena. For more information, contact Josh Sprague.

Last week we were warmly greeted by Michael Opitz and Ed Padilla. They are professionals. The front desk was handled by Marty Kupper, Libby Schmit and Axel Steuer. They had a busy day checking in the huuuuuuge number of guests on Prospective Member Day.

Things were a bit stressful for President Ann Platt as she could not contact our speaker. Phone calls, text messages, emails and smoke signals were sent but at 12:32 p.m., still no luck tracking down our speaker, Dr. Penny Wheeler. She even pulled me in for tech support—talk about desperation! Two minutes later the doctor was in the house and all was well. Ring the bell—meeting begins.
