A former Rotary Scholar hosted by the Rotary Club of Edina was recently consecrated a bishop in the Church of England. Rotary Club of Edina Member David Clynes was present for the event.
Jo Bailey Wells, 50, was named the new Bishop of Dorking in March and ceremonies were recently held in Canterbury. The Bishop of Dorking is an assistant bishop for the whole Diocese of Guilford. Jo will have a particular focus on education and also the recruitment of clergy, amid provision from the Church of England for a 50 percent increase in new trainee-vicars by 2020. Jo is just the fifth Bishop of Dorking, following the retirements of the Rt Revd Ian Brackley, who had served for 19 years in that role. She is the 10th woman bishop in the Church of England.
A native of Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England, Jo was a Rotary Scholar in 1987 and 1988, studying for her master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. Her Rotary counselors were Bill and Lois Clynes. She received her bachelor’s degree at Cambridge University before coming to the United States. Later, she received her doctorate from St. John’s College in Durham, England. She was ordained in 1995 in the first wave of female priests.
Jo is married to Sam, who is a vicar of St Martin-in-the-Fields, central London. They have two children: Laurence, 13, and Stephanie, 12. Jo’s interests include art, renovation and textiles.

"I am truly overwhelmed by your generosity. Our lovely new Community Room is beautiful. Our event on June 2 was well attended and the renovation well received. Lots of oohs and ahhs!
"We are thrilled to be able to offer this luxurious space to guests and to the larger community for meetings, workshops, retreats, conferences and other gatherings. In fact, we have two separate groups using the Community Room this week for meetings and we received an inquiry last week about using the space for a potential yoga workshop!
"In keeping with our focus of bidirectional integration, this tremendous gift will allow us to fulfill our mission of educating the broader community about autism and focusing on all of the amazing gifts these talented young adults possess and are capable of. Our members will help host these events by greeting attendees at the front door, assisting with food and beverage, public speaking and leading an Erik's Minnesota Adventures tour. This reciprocal interaction will last a lifetime. Thank you."
-- Kathryn Nordberg, Erik's Ranch, Inc.
"Thank you to the Rotary Club of Edina for making a library donation in my name to the Edina Public Schools. This pleases me very much. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with your members and friends. God bless you!"
