President Jennifer Bennerotte started us off at 12:35 p.m. after members enjoyed a wonderful buffet lunch. Jennifer thanked Lisa Walker and Dale Walker for warmly greeting us. Dan Hare assisted our wonderful club administrator, Jennifer Garske, with front desk duties. King of the $149.00 oil change and our District Governor Tim Murphy led us in prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test. Libby Schmit introduced several Rotarians who had guests at the meeting:
• Greg Yoch introduced his wife, Ahroon Yoch, and sister-in-law, Andrea Yoch
• David Clynes introduced Tom Cook
• Dr. Tim Fargo welcomed Jeff Watson
• Sue Spalding introduced Stephanie Dix Campbell
• Josh Sprague brought two guests: Mike Tingum and Toni Gerard. Toni was just approved for membership at our board meeting last Thursday. Welcome Toni!
Steve Buettner brought student guest Casey Dornbach, a senior at Edina High School. I learned online Casey sports a 4.0 GPA and served as captain of this year’s Hornet Hockey Team.
Meg Boehne was inducted by our highly esteemed Past President, Steve Slyce. Welcome Meg! Meg introduced her husband Ted Boehne, who joined us to celebrate Meg’s induction. Meg was sponsored by another Past President, Scott MacDonald.
Program Chair Greg Yoch was introduced by President Jennifer. Jennifer shared a cute "brother" story about her parents' recent calls (plural) admonishing her to contact Robert, her (30-year-old dating-but not-married) brother and advise him on proper Valentine's Day protocol. If you’re puzzled by proper procedure or protocol a “Dear Jennifer” letter may be in order. Maybe next year a new Barker column is on the horizon. Move over Dear Abby and Ann Landers!
Greg introduced his brother Steve Yoch as our speaker. Both Steve and Greg are sons of Rotary Club of Edina member Ted Yoch and his wife, Fran Yoch. Greg kept the introduction brief with a few facts: Steve attended Breck, went to Boston College and then earned his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. Steve practices law in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. Steve and wife, Andrea, have two sons. Ryan is a freshman at Georgetown and Ben is a junior at Mounds View High School.
The title of Steve’s talk shares the name of his first book: “Becoming George Washington.”
Steve opened his talk with an invitation for audience participation. A hands up/down vote was held on the following three questions:
• Were the teeth of George Washington made of wood?
• Did George wear a wig?
• Did George chop the cherry tree/tell a lie?
The answers were given at the end of Steve’s talk.
As The Barker writer, I couldn’t keep pace with all the information Steve was sharing. Let me say this: Steve’s talk was insightful, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable! He packed a lot of material into a talk that he shut down at 1:16 p.m. to leave room for questions. A very intelligent speaker! View Steve's presentation online if you missed it!
Thanks, Steve, for sharing your talents and insights.
Jennifer closed with a George Washington quote: “Observe good faith and justice toward all nations, cultivate peace and harmony with all.”
The meeting adjourned promptly at 1:30 p.m.
