Prospective Member Day at this week's meeting
The Rotary Club of Edina will hold a Prospective Member Day at the Thursday, Oct. 20 meeting. All Edina Rotarians are encouraged to bring a colleague or friend that is interested in learning more about Rotary and our club. Lunch is on the club for all prospective members at this week's meeting! Make sure to have your guests check in at the front desk when they arrive.

The program speaker at the meeting will be Randy Stenger, founder and CEO of Extreme Sandbox, a heavy equipment adventure company that lets clients play on construction equipment. Stenger and the Extreme Sandbox concept were featured on the ABC network's show "Shark Tank" in January 2016.
From the President
This past week has been a week of Rotary Serving Humanity!

It started last Wednesday when Joe Hayes coordinated the Leadership Ethics Seminar for Edina High School students. The 65 students gathered with 30 Rotarians and other community leaders who acted as table captains to facilitate case study discussion. What a fabulous day! I know the students at my table walked away with a greater appreciation of “Doing the Right Thing” as they deal with ethical questions.

On Saturday about 30 Rotarians and family members packed meals at Feed My Starving Children. In less than 90 minutes 36 boxes were packed, which meant 7,776 meals will be shipped to Haiti this week. Thank you, Brad Beard, for scheduling and recruiting all of these volunteers. I’m sure everyone left feeling great that we were are able to help those folks in Haiti whose lives have been ravaged by Hurricane Matthew.

On Sunday, new member Tom Cook took the lead on the lead on the fall clean-up of Utley and Wooddale Parks in Edina. Another great service project!

Thank You Joe, Brad and Tom for your service!

There are more opportunities to get involved:

  • Fall Fireside Chats are this week and next, including the first one tonight! Invitations have been sent and this is a wonderful way to get to know your fellow Rotarians in a casual setting.  We encourage everyone to register.
  • Camp Enterprise is Oct. 27 to 29 and volunteers are still needed. Contact Sam Thompson or Kip Peterson to sign up.
  • A musical evening out is set for Nov. 19, with dinner before a St. Paul Chamber Orchestra concert.
  • Thanksgiving baskets will be prepared for those less fortunate on Wednesday, Nov. 23.  We encourage all members and their family members to participate.

Letter Bag
This is a photo of Ali Abas, a former STRIVE student, who graduated in 2012. He was Jerry Potter’s mentee [while in the program]. Ali currently attends Lower Columbia Community College in Longview, Washington, where he is studying Diesel Technology under an Opportunity Grant (a state-funded program for students in a technical program to prepare for a high-demand career). He will continue to study for a Bachelor of Applied Science in Diesel Technology at Centralia College.

Ali is visiting relatives in Minnesota this weekend and after landing in Minneapolis this morning, his first stop was Edina High School where he planned to see Heidi Howard. I was a mentor in STRIVE when he was there and Ali saw me in the hallway and called my name. We also met with Kathleen MacLennan, another mentor, and Ali will spend the day meeting with students and previous teachers as well. I experienced an inspirational and emotional morning with him as he told us about his life and his plans.

Ali talked about the impact STRIVE had on him, especially Jerry, who truly took Ali under his wing. Ali wears a large watch because “Jerry taught me that time is valuable and important."  He knew Jerry was always there for him and we assured him Jerry was proud of him today, even though we all wish Jerry was here to say it himself. Ali talked about how Heidi has made a difference in his life and he knew she was always there for him. When he got into some school trouble as a sophomore, the Assistant Principal told him Heidi would be disappointed and that changed his behavior because “I did not want to disappoint Heidi."

Ali has committed to finish his program without a break because he remembers how much Jerry focused on “commitment."

He told us stories of being the only black student in his classes in this small town in Washington, and how an Aryan Nation student was in his class. His classmates, who were initially skeptical of Ali, stood up for him and Ali said he knew he would have no trouble with that guy. He said he has to trust people, and when Heidi said that is a way to get hurt sometimes, he said “yes, but that is life." He was grateful for learning how to ask for help in STRIVE, and that his teachers and the school are very supportive. He had a great story about taking a sauna with the city council leaders at the local YMCA [in Washington] and how one man was spewing anti-Muslim statements. After some time passed, Ali politely said “Sir, I am Muslim, and I am not going to shoot at you.” And of course the man stopped spewing his hatred, at least around Ali.

He is patient and kind and wise for his years. We are proud and wanted to share this good news with Rotary and all those who believed in Ali and so many other students. It may take awhile, but sometimes the seeds do take root! Ali Abas is an inspiration to me to continue to show up for our students at Edina High School.

Sincerely,
Ann Schulze

Meet a new member...David Aase
Periodically we feature a newer member of the Rotary Club of Edina in The Barker. The Rotary Club of Edina welcomed David Aase as a member in November 2015. David's sponsor to the club was Josh Sprague. Read on to get to know more about David...

Name: David Aase

Classification: Commercial Real Estate

What was your first job? Working in my mother’s retail store in Northfield, Minnesota.

Who was your first role model and why? My mother. She was a single mom who had to overcome a lot in her life. She instilled a lot of drive and creativity in both my brother and I to become the men we are today.

Why did you want to join Rotary? After residing in Fargo, North Dakota, for 3+ years, my family and I decided to finally put down roots in Edina. I wanted to join Rotary to be a part of something bigger than myself, and to meet and connect with like-minded people.

What do you like best about being part of the Rotary Club of Edina? John Flynn’s laugh. Seriously, though humor is a big part of my life. I enjoy the fact that most Edina Rotarians do serious business while not taking themselves too seriously.

What one piece of advice do you offer other business leaders? Persistence always pays off, do not give up on something you’re passionate about and believe in.

Thanks for being such a great member, David!

In review
President Ann Platt opened the annual joint meeting with the Edina Morningside Rotary Club with her usual charm and good humor, thanking the full house of attendees for their dedication and commitment as representatives of the Edina community to the Rotary International organization.
Edina Morningside Rotary Club President Tom Gump led us in a thoughtful invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance and the Rotary Four-Way Test. Steve Slyce introduced the guests and their hosts, including:

  • Andy Bach, son of Tom Bach, and Adrian Hill, both guests of Tom and signed up to attend Camp Enterprise this year
  • Kim Stoner, guest of Jody Kern
  • Kevin Fischer, introduced by Sandy Schley
  • Beth  Dienst, guest and niece of Ann Platt
  • Mary Helen Bosquez, a visiting Rotarian from the Maple Grove Rotary Club, who graciously invited all to their annual Gala in November and passed around raffle tickets for purchase.
Announcements and volunteer opportunities included:

  • The Rev. Tom Cook spoke of the clean-up at Wooddale and Utley Parks scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 16.
  • EMRC President Tom Gump gave information on the upcoming Area 3 Rotary Veterans Luncheon on Nov. 11 at Bearpath Golf and Country Club in Eden Prairie.
  • Peter Kelly of EMRC, chair of this year's Camp Enterprise, spoke of the Camp E program for high school students and the unique opportunity volunteers have to work with these future business and community leaders. He told the story of two past camp attendees, having met at the camp, became good friends, started a successful business together in college and recently married. Proof Camp E provides young people opportunities well beyond what is taught in the schools!
  • Dave Hatzung and Brad Hepp provided a light-hearted and well-prepared announcement about the Thanksgiving Baskets meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 23. The parody left many fellow Rotarians asking, “Where do these veteran insurance executives find the time to rehearse their scripts for these speaking engagements? It’s simply astounding!”
Mary Younggren introduced the guest speaker, Joe Puishys, President and CEO of Apogee Enterprises, Inc.

Apogee Enterprises designs, engineers, and manufactures window systems for commercial and security buildings. They also manufacture glass for the auto industry, film coatings, picture framers and others. Their commercial glass can be found on buildings around the world, including the tallest building in the western hemisphere, One World Trade Center in NY and our own US Bank Stadium.

Joe provided an inspiring speech, talking about influential people he has met throughout his business career providing him with valuable lessons he hopes to instill in his employees. He told the story of a slightly intimidating boss he had early in his career asking him for a one-on-one presentation. After preparing a full presentation including visual aids, his boss pushed the presentation aside and said "I just want to talk." Joe, to this day, does not believe in presentations and warns his employees, "You are going to hear me talk." Judging from his short time at our meeting, I’m sure his employees look forward to hearing him speak anytime.

Sue Spalding thanked our speaker.
