The Rotary Club of Edina will receive an update on the International Service project in Guatemala at the Thursday, June 20, meeting. Rotarian Gary Pedersen spearheaded our club's water sanitation project in Guatemala, which has achieved a Rotary International Global Grant and involved donations from many area Rotary clubs. Gary and the International Service Committee has been working on the project for three years.

 

Also speaking at the meeting are representatives of OneVillage Partners—founder Jeff Hall and executive Director Jill LaLonde. They will speak about "Rotary Partnership with OneVillage Partners in Sierra Leone," and give members info about another upcoming International Service project with our club.

 

 

Rotary Club of Edina will host another Prospective Member Day this Thursday, July 20. All Rotarians are encouraged to bring a friend or colleague to the meeting that is interested in learning more about Rotary and our club. Lunch is on the club for all prospective members July 20! Please make sure your guests sign in at the guest table before the meeting.

It is with surprise and sadness that I share this news Past President and Past District Governor Sandy Schley and fellow member Jim Ryman shared with me this past weekend: Rotary International President-Elect Sam Owori died unexpectedly after a scheduled surgical procedure last week.

Our club’s contingent to Rotary International’s Atlanta Convention 2017 heard Sam Owori (pictured above) speak when he was nominated and accepted the appointment as 108th President of Rotary International in 2018–2019. At the time, less than two months ago, he came across as vibrant, full of life, hope and promise. In his acceptance speech, he sated “I feel immense satisfaction knowing through Rotary, I’ve helped someone live better.”

As President Ian Riseley stated in Rotary’s official statement “in this difficult time, I ask you to keep his wife, Norah, the Owori family and Sam’s millions of friends around the world in your thoughts.”

The July 13 meeting was the first meeting of the new Rotary year. President San Asato presided over his first meeting, with program speaker Dr. Nancy Cummings, who spoke about sports injuries in youth athletes. 

 

Rotarian Dan Hallberg spoke to the club in the first of the new "Six-Carat Diamond Talk" series, showcasing our longtime Rotarians as we celebrate the 60th year of the Rotary Club of Edina.
