Dr. Nancy Cummings to speak at meeting

The Rotary Club of Edina will welcome Dr. Nancy Cummings as program speaker at the first meeting of the new Rotary year, Thursday, July 13. Cummings is an assistant professor of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic and is the head orthopedic team physician for the Minnesota Lynx. She will speak about "Youth Sports Injuries—Single vs. Multi-Sport Athletes."

Rotarians march in Fourth of July Parade

President San Asato and his wife, Sheila Asato, rode in Dave Hatzung's convertible in the Fourth of July parade in Edina. Joining San and Sheila were Rotarians carrying the "Rotarians are Every Day Super Heroes" banner and handing out pencils and candy, while accompanied by costumed super heroes! Thanks to Dan Hennen, Josh Sprague and family and Greg Yoch for handling parade duties, along with San and Dave! Other Rotarians also took part in the parade, such as Tim Murphy and Grandview Tire & Auto and Ann and Jim Platt and Pets Are Inn, and many others.

I cannot tell you how honored I am to have been your president this past Rotary year. You were all so supportive and encouraging and this meant so much to me.

We will be distributing an annual report at this week’s meeting. Be sure to pick up a copy as it highlights accomplishments and includes financial reports for both the club and the foundation. If you are unable to attend and wish to receive a copy, please let Jennifer Garske or I know and we will make sure to email you a copy. Your club and foundation boards did an excellent job of ensuring that we were able to be examples of "Rotary Serving Humanity."

66 West Grand Opening set for Aug. 3

WHAT: 66 West Grand Opening

WHEN: 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3

WHERE: 66 West Apartments, 3330 66th St. W., Edina

WHO: All Edina Rotarians are invited. The community room at 66 West was our Club's Signature Project for the 2016–2017 Rotary year. There will be a chance to tour the facility, and a short outdoor program will begin at 5:30 p.m. This event will take place rain or shine. Please dress for the weather.

Jamal is able to give back.

I am grateful for your gift of $30,000 to Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative. Your contribution to the community room at 66 West will help welcome young people like Jamal to stable housing and supportive services at 66 West.

Jamal's family moved to the United States when he was 12. He worked hard to adapt, learn English, and do well in school. But then his dad moved back to Ethiopia to see medical care. Jamal, only 16, was left alone to care for himself and his siblings. "At that age, you still need support," Jamal says. On his own, he faltered and felt uncertain about his future.
