Caryn Sullivan to speak at this week's meeting
Caryn Sullivan will be the program speaker at the Thursday, Oct. 6, Rotary Club of Edina meeting. She will speak about "Living in the Moment, Preparing for the Inevitable."

Sullivan is an inspirational speaker, award-winning columnist and author of Bitter or Better: Grappling With Life on the Op-Ed Page, winner of a 2015 Midwest Book award. A recovering attorney, she weaves her intellectual curiosity and her empathetic heart into her writing and speaking. A cancer survivor, widow and mother of both a bone marrow transplant survivor and her donor, Caryn’s passion is helping others to find the “better” in and out of life’s experiences. Her columns can be read in the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Rotarian Toni Gerard will give her classification talk at the meeting.

A Special Night in a New York State of Mind!
The dust has settled, Deuces Wild has packed up and we now have memories of how we once were in a New York State of Mind. Thanks to those of you who attended our annual Edina Rotary Foundation Fundraiser & Gala last Saturday at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bloomington.

We had nearly 280 attendees with fun entertainment and laughs by many. We are getting close to budget yet still need help meeting our goal. If you were not able to attend this year’s Gala and would like to contribute to our fundraiser, use the Playbill/donation form to make a donation. Even if you did attend the Gala and feel inclined to contribute again, we would appreciate it!

We want to once again thank all of our volunteers who made this a very memorable evening. In the program we had listed the volunteers that helped contribute multiple hours to our Gala. Unfortunately, we omitted some very important people from the list. Marty Kupper and Mike Opitz did an incredible job with the raffle tickets. They exceeded their ticket sales by about 23 percent. Jon Barnett did a great job as auctioneer. Edina Interact students Julia, Lauren and Sofia also helped out at the Gala.

The following volunteers also should have been listed in the program as they contributed in many ways to making the fundraiser a success:

  • Joe Arends
  • Matt Boockmeier
  • Rick Carlson
  • David Clynes
  • Jennifer Garske
  • Bob & Rosie Gubrud
  • Mary Hatzung
  • Mary Hustad
  • Nancy Hutchison
  • Jody Kern
  • Steve & Nancy Slyce
  • Katie Wanninger Smith
  • Lisa Walker
  • Dave Wendt
Thanks also to our sponsors. This area exceeded our expectations.

Our Co-Chairs for next year, Don Hutchison and Lisa Walker, are already working on the plans for the 2017 Fundraiser & Gala. If you’d like to join the fun and be part of next year’s Gala committee, feel free to contact Don or Lisa.

The Edina Rotary Foundation Gala & Fundraising Committee would like to thank all of your for your support.

Rotary happy hour is this Wednesday, Oct. 5
Join us for the Edina Rotary Happy Hour/Vocational Development Group. The next gathering will be Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at The Mezz, located upstairs in Lunds & Byerly's at 7171 France Ave. S. in Edina. Access The Mezz from the entrance closest to France Avenue (SW corner of the store). Wine and craft beer is available at your own cost. A limited menu may be available, but you can also purchase food in the grocery deli and bring it upstairs.

The event will feature a short social period, with a "formal" program beginning at 6 p.m. Each person will have a brief opportunity to introduce themselves and make new connections. A featured presenter will have 15 minutes to share information that is relevant to his or her profession followed by a short Q&A period. The speaker at the Oct. 5 gathering is Rena Feldman of Inview Interior Design. Jim Bizal of Bizal Built is scheduled as the Nov. 2 speaker. Both are members of the Edina Morningside Rotary Club. Rotary Happy Hour is a collaboration between the Rotary Club of Edina and EMRC.
