The annual Area 3 Rotary Veterans Luncheon is this Friday, Nov. 11, at Bearpath Golf and Country Club, 18100 Bearpath Trail, Eden Prairie. Registration begins at 11 a.m. with live music, with the luncheon beginning at 11:15 and concluding at 1:15 p.m.
Our club is one of eight southwest metro Rotary clubs in District 5950 to sponsor this special Veterans Day Luncheon to honor those who have served our country. The keynote speaker at the luncheon will be Brigadier General Sandra Best. She was named the first female general in the history of the Minnesota National Guard earlier this year. Emcee of the luncheon is General Denny Schulstad, U.S. Air Force (retired), a member of the Rotary Club of Edina.
Each Rotarian was invited to bring up to two veterans as guests of our club, and Senior Active and Honorary Rotarians who are veterans may attend free of charge. Cost for guests that are not veterans will be $25. Payment can be made at the door, or charged on members' next quarterly invoice. The Veterans Luncheon will take the place of our club's regular meeting that week, so there is no additional charge for regular Rotary Club of Edina members to attend. Senior Active or Honorary members who are not veterans will be charged the usual $20.
The Rotary Club of Edina, along with the Edina Chamber of Commerce and Edina Morningside Rotary club, will host a mixer for members and prospective members tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the Edina Country Club. The gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. and will be a fun evening of connection and cross pollination.
All Rotarians and Chamber members should bring a guest to the gathering. Guests will learn more about these great local organizations, and have a chance to network with membership. This is a great opportunity to meet area business leaders who actively serve our community and learn more about each organization's upcoming programs and activities. Non-members are cordially welcome to attend and see if Rotary or Chamber membership is for you.
Registration for the mixer ended Monday, Nov. 7. Contact Erica Hollom at the Chamber or Greg Yoch for more details.
The Rotary Club of Edina will partner with the Edina Morningside Rotary Club again this year for the Thanksgiving Baskets Assembly event on Wednesday, Nov. 23. Bring your family and join your fellow Rotarians at the Edina Country Club for this great event before you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday. We will gather at 11:45 a.m. for lunch, and then will begin assembling the Thanksgiving baskets for area families in need after that. Volunteers are needed for the basket assembly, as well as deliveries after the event.
Contact Michael Stanzak or Mary Hustad with info about who you would like to be paired up with for deliveries or for more information about the event. Baskets are delivered to families in Edina, and north and south Minneapolis.
We'd like all interested Rotarians to sign up online by end of day Thursday, Nov. 17, to plan for the event. Rotarians with regular memberships do not have to pay for lunch at the door. Senior Active or Honorary members pay the usual $20, and guests also will be charged $20 for adults, $12 for children.
We'll see you there with family to pack baskets for those in need this holiday season!

The light drizzle Saturday, Oct. 29, could do nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of almost 100 Camp Enterprise students and the dozens of Rotarian volunteers as they cheered the final keynote speaker and waited to learn who wowed the volunteer venture capitalists and who would be awarded scholarships. With only five winners, the latter was a tough choice because every student hit it out of the park. According to one venture capitalist, "This group is going to fix the world's problems!"
Many thanks to the dedicated group of volunteers who made 2016 Camp Enterprise a rousing success. Sam Thompson is already on the lookout for help for 2017!
Our Nov. 3 meeting was called to order by our very capable president, Ann Platt. With the help of media giant Paul Peterson, we watched and listened to a video of the history of Rotary, 100 years of doing good both globally and in our own communities.
We were greeted by members of Edina Rotary Club as well as members from the Edina Morningside Rotary Club. Steve Buettner lead us in the invocation, where he asked us not bow our heads, but instead to take a look around the room at all the men and women dedicated to helping improve the lives of others. He then lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Rotary Four-Way Test.
As this was a large and special Rotary meeting—shared with members from area Rotary clubs including Bloomington Daymakers, Bloomington Noon, Eagan Kick-Start, Eden Prairie AM, Eden Prairie Noon, Edina Morningside, Minneapolis City of Lakes, Minneapolis University, Minneapolis Uptown, Minnetonka and Richfield—guests and visiting Rotarians were asked to stand and be recognized as a group rather than being individually introduced. We were honored to have in attendance District 5950 Governor Mark Hegstrom and his wife, Colleen Hegstrom, as well as past District Governors Tim Murphy, Jim Nelson, Diann Kirby, Holly Callen and Sandy Schley.
Kip Peterson, 2015 chair of Camp Enterprise and a volunteer at this year's Camp E, gave a re-cap of the successful three-day leadership camp. Ninety-nine students attended the camp at the end of October, and Edina High School student Ava Lusty thanked both Edina Rotary clubs for the opportunity to attend 2016 Camp E and explained how much she learned and what fantastic experience it was.
Kim Ross, Eden Prairie Noon President and chair of this year's Area 3 Rotary Veterans Luncheon, announced the event will be Friday, Nov. 11, at Bearpath Golf and Country Club in Eden Prairie. The speaker will be Brigadier General Sandra Best.
President Ann Platt reminded us to sign up for Rotary Chamber Mixer Nov. 9 and Thanksgiving Baskets Nov. 23, both at the Edina Country Club.
Past District Governor Tim Murphy introduced our esteemed speaker, Rotary International Vice President Jennifer Jones. Jennifer serves on the Rotary International Board of Directors and is a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland in Ontario, Canada. She spoke about the “Future of Rotary." She reminded us that what separates Rotary from other service organizations comes down to three key findings:
We are leaders—leaders by mindset.
Connectivity—we make global connections.
We are a community service club scaled globally—we go as big or as little as we want.
Jeff Ohe thanked Jennifer for her inspirational talk. Ann closed the meeting with a quote about friendship and reminded us that we join Rotary for the networking but stay for the friendships we make.
