Rotary’s Council on Legislation met last year, resulting in a new standard club constitution, Rotary clubs’ guiding document. The new constitution covers excused absences for senior members. Senior Active Members – Rotarians may be considered “Senior Active” when the aggregate of the member’s years of age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more, the member has been a member of one or more clubs for at least 20 years, and the member has notified the club secretary in writing of the member’s desire to be excused from attendance and the board has approved. Senior Active Members are billed quarterly for dues, but pay for meals as they attend meetings.

Note that a member must have been a Rotarian for at least 20 years before he or she can be considered for Senior Active membership. Then, the Rotarian’s age and years of membership must equal 85 or more.

Though our club must comply in order to keep its constitution, the membership must formally vote in favor of the bylaw change. Such a vote will be scheduled for a future meeting.
